Optimizing Restaurant Operations with a POS System for L&L Teriyaki

Tablet And Desktop Application Design

About

OrderUp is a custom iOS iPad-based POS system designed to modernize L&L Teriyaki, a family-owned restaurant previously reliant on manual order processing and sales tracking. The application streamlines order management, table reservations, online ordering, and sales analytics, providing restaurant staff with real-time insights and an intuitive interface for improved workflow efficiency.

01 Problem Context

L&L Teriyaki operated with a manual, paper-based system for order-taking and sales tracking, leading to slow service, calculation errors, and difficulties in tracking sales trends. Staff faced challenges in efficiently managing orders, monitoring top-selling items, and handling customer reservations, which impacted overall operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

02 Research Insights

To understand the restaurant's challenges, we conducted user research, on-site observations, and interviews with staff and management.

Son Dang

@L&L Cashier

Struggles with manually calculating orders using a basic calculator while referencing the physical menu. This becomes even more challenging when customers request modifications, such as changing the rice type or protein, or when applying tax exemptions for students on the $6 teriyaki bowl, increasing the chance of errors and slowing down service.

Kevin Tran

@L&L Server

Faces difficulties in tracking dine-in vs. takeout orders, leading to mix-ups during rush hours. Since all orders are handwritten, special requests like extra sauce or ingredient substitutions are often missed, causing order inaccuracies and customer frustration.

Lisa Nguyen

@L&L Manager

Spends excessive time manually calculating daily sales and identifying best-selling items. Without a real-time sales tracking system, inventory restocking is based on estimates rather than data, leading to occasional shortages or over-purchasing.

03 The Design

As Lead UX Designer, I led a team of 8 through wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing to create OrderUp, an intuitive iOS POS system for L&L Teriyaki. It features a streamlined touchscreen interface, automated sales analytics, and integrated reservations and online ordering, ensuring efficiency and accessibility for staff.

04 Website App
